photoshop curves
It has been many months since kitten told me that photoshop auto levels (available from Image->Adjust->autolevel menu) are not the answer to everything and that the historgram (Image->Adjust->levels) is a much more useful tool when you have a dull and boring digital photograph because you can manually adjust your shadows, midtones and highlights. Her tip greatly enhanced the quality of my photos - thanks kitten for taking the fear out of histograms, and for being my live human cyber spellchecker.
I have recently summed up courage to explore yet a more frightenning feature of photoshop, namely that of Curves. This option has always been in my Image->adjust menu. Having not done much math since high school, as soon as I see the graph all fades away into shadows of grey except the Cancel button. Now that I know what they do, I think it is valid to say that they are the most essential feature of photoshop for photographers. I was suprized when I tried searching the net for curves tutorials but only very few were available.
I very highly recommend this tutorial for the curves illiterate. They are very much like histograms except they allow you to adjust the whole tonal range of the image, not just the shadows, midtones and highlight. This can take the dullness out of any photo.
