Flickr Changes The Rules
The debate on FlickrLand continues (563 replies in two days and counting). I decided to quit it when Flickr adminstration explained they will implement an 18+ filter and a switch in every member’s profile. Thanks for that. It is sad to see the useless turn of topics of what was originally a very informative discussion. It was not where the debate was previously headed. I guess we can live on flickr still without neccessary having to murder each other. There are peopel from both side of the argument who try very keenly to impose their morals on others, disregarding the middle solution that will accomodate everyone (which is what is going to be implemented now anyway). Few fellow Emaratis are even trying to lobby for a blanket proxy ban on flickr. Now we dont really want that do we? We should try to bring better understanding between our culture and the rest of the world not ban the means of communication with it.

I hate it when this happens.. blowing things out of proportion.. i mean we said what we had to say.. we explained our point clearly.. they’ve taken our point into consideration and respected it.. why extend the issue even further.. i mean i got sick of reading some of the comments.. the filter is there to help.. it might not provide the full solution but it’s a way to help accomodate it..
we’ve gotten to a point where the discussion is pointless.. too many people taking it too personal..
if some are so eager then create a uae flickr site!
and don’t misinterpret my words.. i am not pro nudity nor am i ok with pronography.. i am just against wasting time having endless conversations.. i like things with solutions and we have one in place.. so cheer up everyone..
e3ashig thanks for bringing up the subject..

Things like these that make me glad I’m not into flickr.
Matter of fact, it’s why I avoid communities in the first place.
I’m only surprised at the extreme level of behaviour - always assumed the crowd ought to have matured by now and got over such caterwauls.
Apparently not.
From the start, the sane way to approach the nudity issue was to request flickr to post a poll to see how many people agree that adult material should be hidden from viewers, or posted with warnings.
Flickr is a Muslim based community, so if one wants to address an issue, one needs to deliver it in a way that appeals to their sensibilities. And what’s more sensible than agreeing that Adult Material ought to be hidden by the site itself from those who find it offensive.
But Now that flickr responded to the Nude Wars with a good solution things should have stopped at that and everyone should have returned to their lives. Right?
Wrong - instead, another havoc is wreaked, branching from the first. This one’s a little tricky: it concerns a certain group of members not behaving accorrding morally correct. Right.
How to stop them? Block the whole community?
Ha! That’s a laugh - you might as well block the whole internet if you want to stop people sharing inappropriate pictures.
Block all forms of webhosting, image hosting, online albums, forums, chatting and even emailing.
To block flickr is to stop a symptom, not the disease.
I really appreciate the efforts that are being pulled to see that anything that threatens public morallity are put to an end.
But this is not how it’s done.
Did you consider addressing the members with reason?
And if that didn’t work, did you consider reporting CERTAIN galleries that have improper material instead of the whole place?
I was never fond of flickr. 90% are addicts who are just looking to procrastinate. And if eventually flickr is blocked, I wouldn’t care to blink.
What bothers me is the attitude of those who call to close flickr.
The way they discuss, they might as well plug their ears and sing “LA LA LA” loudly to avoid listening to others.
If you want people to become more sensible about their time or their behaviour, you have to address them like level-headed beings, and set yourself as an example. You’ll be surprised how people response positively to that, slowly yet surely, like a string that undos a knitted sweater.
If flickr is blocked, people will just move to the next gathering place (like how they moved from chat-rooms to forums to flickr and so on).
But if they quit on their own, they wouldn’t go back to flickr or anywhere else.

Correction:
Line 9 - Flickr is not a Muslime based community.
Line 38 - Like a string that undoes a knitted sweater.
’scuse my mistakes.

Blocking Flickr won’t help anything at all instead they will move to a different place like what Fireband said.
But what really surprised me is that people got addicted to Flick where others can’t stand being there for more than 30mins lol.

uaeyah, i know exactly what you mean. A lot of people just get carried away and take what you say the very wrong way. Some other people are never serious enough and they tempt people to push things towards the personal line, and when that happens they suddenly turn back and start talking in the name of UAE or Islam.. douh.
Raw3h, sho le3bh el block 3nd eshbab :s i dont think it will happen.
Fireband, Problem with many people, is that they start talking straight about hell, heaven and judgment. You can never argue with someone on these bases if they dont believe in them to start with (or if they dont care about them). Then it seriously gets on my nerves when people start enforcing their view on others, and talk in the name of UAE or Islam. Who appointed them to be the spokesman of uae.
Having said that, there were people on the other side, the westren side who were just makign pointless suggestions and coutnerargument and who wouldnt accept that there are people with different morals than the west. And their solution to the problem is (either leave flickr, or find a third party solution, dont bug us with it)
I think the solution that flickr will implement will sort out the problem.
Flickr is a coool website, there are loads of useful things happening there. i dont think you should boycut it because some people use it purposless-ly.
Blackpearls, i am an addict :z
