My Life Of Moving

My life has been a continues chain of moving. I hardly remember ever settling in one place for any long period of time.

I was born in little hospital in Al-Ain and as the world was recovering from the joyful delight of my existence, we moved to the Abu Dhabi to live for the next five years. I only have a single vague memory of that period in my life of a house in white with a small garden on its side. Soon after, we moved against the flux outside of Abu Dhabi where I grew up in a small and delightful little village. I joined school at five, but then at seven, I transferred to a military school where I remained till the age of 13. The ministry of education then decided to decommission our school due to risk of collapse and I had to move to a modern military boarding school - this time in Al-Ain, my original birthplace. I lived inside the school campus and only went home for weekends and holidays. After three years, the school principle asked me if it was ok to transfer me to yet another military boarding school in Sharjah which I accepted. In Sharjah, Mergab, in a much smaller campus, I lived for the next two years and met few of the best people whose friendship is value till this day.

After school, I packed my belongings and moved again to a more distanced world; UK. Initially, I did not have a clue of what is to come and ended up staying in Clydebank for few months, then Edinburgh for the rest of the year, then back to Langside in Glasgow for a year then moved to St Andrews for the next three years. In 2002, I moved yet again to Manchester where I currently reside.

Visiting home for holidays only has been the norm since I was 13. As soon as I traveled abroad, my family moved back to Abu Dhabi and I had to transfer the few belongings in my room to the new place and change my destination for traveling back.

Often friends ask me why I am reluctant to do any more moving. I had enough of dragging my life with me from one place to the next. Now, with the prospects of a new job in a nearby town, I may yet again have to change base.

I seriously hate moving.

I moved from one town to another in my years in the UK. I hate the actual process of moving, but I realised after all these years that one should travel or move to new places, in order to be open to new influences, and to change.

For the first 19 years of my life I lived in my hometown, in the same house.
In 2000 I moved countries to Australia in Perth.
In my 5 years in Perth I have moved house about 3-4 times.
Early this year I moved cities to Bunbury, south of Perth.
I will move out of this rented apartment in Bunbury when my new home is finished. Hopefully I will stay in that house for at least 5 years… I cannot bear moving anymore!

Reading your blog post has actually helped me, in knowing that my situation isn’t so bad after all =)

well .. they say in arabic that “traveling has seven benifits” u already mentioned having friends from another emirate ,, if u think of it ,, u wouldn’t be able ever to meet them if u never had to go to the military school which is located in that emirate..

always try to look at the good side of anything u do or u did in yr life ,, so that u learn to love it ,,

Fashonesta, I read that book a while ago : ) nice and intersting read. Gave me an insight when I looked through it.

Rayhan, For better or worse, I would not have been the person I am today if it wasnt for the continues changes.

krzy, thanks. I hope you visit again

r7aal, true that. However, one gets to the stage where you just need to settle.

mn dbai, every one of us has an interesting history to write. It just takes a little digging and to bring up past events from the dusty corners of memory.

BlackPearlz, MaJED, moving sucks big time.

lotusutol, dont you just hate having to do it, even though you’d rather stay in one place and see the same views, and park your car in the same slot and get used to the same passer’s-by.

Dreamy eyes, i am an optimist by nature :) I look at the good side of things el7amdlilah.
