The Wrong Head Gear
There goes again; 5:30 AM and darkness already departed before sleep arrives. I attempt to remedy my insomnia with legitimate means but it gets ever harder every night.
I spent a nice day yesterday finishing little things in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, and back here in Abu Dhabi. Wednesday was a full day that carried one long awaited pleasant piece of news. My night was spent with a couple of friends in a coffee shop in Jumaira called Ali Baba. They had a singer who kept humming to the microphone in an incomprehensible manner for hours nonstop – So much for entertainment.
OK. I have never been a major fan of caps worn on Kandoura’s before. It felt even strange to see friends wearing them instead of traditional head wear. I think over here in Abu Dhabi, people tend to deduce how serious you are from your head gear. A bare headed person is frowned upon and taken less seriously than a person who puts on Ghetra and Egal (the specially folded white sheet and the black robe like thing that fits on top of it) who is often greeted with warm welcomes. Those who wear things in between are greeted with a scale of seriousness in accordance with what exactly they have on. Caps are out of the question. I walked into my bank a couple of days ago with the wrong head gear and was made to wait longer than usual. When I then told the girl that I lost my card and would like the title to be adjusted on the replacement to Dr, she looked at me with one eye on my army green cap and could not conceal a little smile. What the heck, can I not be a doctor because I am wearing a cap?

hahaha maybe u looked younger with a cap…dunno why but I never liked guyz wearing cap on kandoora…I prefer qetra and 3egal …they look more serious when they wear qetra and 3egal.

reverse culture shock? jetlag? =) it’s great to hear that you are visiting home and looking at your own country with fresh eyes. funny how you think it looks strange to see others wear a cap, while you wore it out yourself! at elast you experienced the difference first-hand, and got to blog about it!
i observed interesting goings-on when i visit my home country too, idiosyncrasies that are never picked up if i had stayed behind in my country.

LOL.. Well..i dont think ppl r judged bY whaT they have on their heads that much over here ..
mmm i gueSs it depends where ur goin… if its an official plaCe.. a bank…or something.. then i guess u have to look propper..head set included…its like not wearing jeans at a meeting…if u get my drift..
then again..it depends on whoever is checkin u out and makin the judgement…

Few years ago, I was driving with a friend from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, as soon as we passed under the bridge the marks the borders between the two cities on the motorway, he threw his Ghetra&Egal right to the very back of the car, and pulled a funky cap from his glove box. Bemused, I stared at him and he said: RELAX, WE ARE IN DUBAI NOW!

i guess guyz are getting fed up of the original ‘3etra & 3gal…and wana go mdern and with the flow with the cap thingie thesedays… but if ur going somewhere like a bank…. i suggest u were the ‘3etra and 3gal doc..=)

Not just the head gear that matters, the type of facial hair you have (a beard, a gootee, none), the type of kandoorah you wear, the type of material your kandoorah is made from. Even if you are wearing a wizar or shorts makes a huge difference.
Hey, this is our society..you can hang five PhDs from MIT, but if you are not wearing the right stuff, then good luck.

heheh..wallah you made me laugh….this has been along issue with ma friends trying to explain wy i dnt like gyz wearing caps on kandoorah….i just feel its kinnda of destroying the image of our traditional clothing…and especially in abudhabi….someone can be disrespected if he’s seen wearing cap on kandoorah…its just the whole image kind of thing….all or nothing phenomena..either wearing it the proper way or wearing casual if someone wants to wear acap….wl this is how i c it….thanx for shearing your experience..if you want my advice next time when you to abank in AD just wear ‘3etra o 3egal….betmashy 3emrek asra3 i guess…cheers mate:)
