I am now done!
I am officially no longer employed by the NHS. This marks the end of my time in the UK. I have been in this country for 10 years. Coming here at the age of 17, I initially did a language course, then Scottish Highers, then BSc in medical sciences in St Andrews before joining the MBChB program in Manchester to graduate in 2005. Since then, I have been working for the NHS and my contract has just now expired. I never applied for an other job through MTAS and I am very glad for that because the system over here is a big mess now. Too much change in too short a time.
I really think it was a good idea to stay here after graduation and not go home straight away. I got the chance to experience UK health care first hand from the provider’s end and worked in specialities I am not likely to experience back home (G.U. Medicine and Palliative care for example).
While I may have missed some opportunities back in Abu Dhabi, I think my time here was very valuable and I do not regret any of it.

does it really feel that long? i bet it doesn’t, after you’re here a few months it’ll be like you never left!
i find it takes a while to adjust culturally, and in public places..like where do you stand in the queue, or do you just jump it and ask at the front if this is the right queue, and what do you do when the person who has just come in goes straight to the counter instead of taking a number and waiting!
A big WELCOME BACK at any rate, 10 years is a long while by any measure, and we hope to see you on these shores more often!
